b. Size. One sign not exceeding two square feet in area shall be permitted per dwelling unit. For
multiple dwellings, one or more additional signs totaling twelve(12)square feet in area shall be
permitted.
C. Location. Permitted signs may be anywhere on the premises, except as restricted by this title,
except that they may not project beyond any property lines and except that, if ground-mounted,
the top shall be not over five (5)feet above the ground and, if building-mounted, shall be flush
mounted,shall not be mounted on any roof of the building and shall not project above the roof line.
d. Content.The sign per dwelling unit shall indicate only the name of the occupant and may include
the address.The additional sign area permitted for multiple dwellings shall be only for identification
of the building.
e. Illumination. Illumination, if used,shall be what is known as white and not colored light and shall
not be blinking, fluctuating, or moving. Light rays shall shine only upon the sign or upon the
property%►fain the premises and shall not spill over the property lines in any direction except by
indirect reflection.
f. Subdivision or Muw-Family Entrance Signs. In subdivisions or multi-family areas involving two(2)
acres or more in size,one sign may be permanently mounted at each entrance to the area for the
purpose of identifying the development. The developer shall obtain a permit for the purpose of
erecting such sign. The identification sign may be up to thirty-two(32)square feet in total area.
7. Business/Mercantile
a. General.This Section shall apply to all zones designated by this Code as business including NC,
CBD, GC,Al, I, BP.
(b:.: Size a total sign area of one and one-half(1'/2) square feet for each lineal foot of building
_ outage or one-half('/2)square foot for each lineal foot of lot frontage,whichever results in the
- larger sign area,but the maximum total area of all permitted signs for any establishment shall not
exceed four hundred (400) square feet, except the CBD zones maximum total area shall not
exceed three hundred (300)square feet.
J Where the frontage is more than one street, only the signs computed with the frontage of that
street shall face that street.
C. Location
(1) Signs may be flat wall signs and may be located anywhere on the surface of the building.
Signs may be projecting signs only where, in compliance with this Section,there is not
building setback,and then may project no more than six(6)feet above a public sidewalk
_and fifteen(15)feet above public driveways or alleys.
( Where a building does not cover the full area of the property,a sign may be freestanding,
or ground-supported and may be located anywhere back of the street setback lines,
except as may be further limited by this Section. Such a sign may extend up to twee
20 feet above the average ground level at the base of the sign except as may be
required by this Ue.
(3) Signs may be on the vertical faces of marquees and may project below the lower edge
of the marquee not more than twelve(12)inches.The bottom of the marquee signs shall
be no less than eight(8)feet above the sidewalk or grade at any point.

(4) Roof signs are allowed as provided in Sections S-801 through S-803 of the Uniform Sign
Code adopted in Section 16.04.020 of Arlington's Municipal Code; provided that no roof
signs shall exceed twenty(20)square feet in area nor be more than five(5)feet in height.
The size of other signs shall be as otherwise provided in Subsection 7.b.of this Section.
d. Illumination. Illumination of signs is permitted,}bum in accordance rtherestrictions� hereinafter

g, Highway Commercial Establishments
a. Automobile service stations, new and used car lots, garden shops, and other such businesses
which may defined as outdoor merchandising or highway-oriented enterprises may be permitted
to have, per establishment,one(1)identity sign not over twenty-eight(28)feet high above ground
level and building-mounted, roof-mounted,or ground-mounted,with no part or projection closer
to a street property line than five(5)feet, except as may be required by this title, and which can
in no way block the visibility of approaching traffic.
b. The maximum total area of a pole mounted sign shall be one hundred fifty(150)square feet,with
no one side having a surface area greater than seventy-five(75)square feet.
C. Incidental signs indicating services, products, prices, trade information, or other information not
including product advertising may be attached to the structure or may be listed on one
permanently installed sign structure at least five(5)feet from any property line.
d. No products or product containers or signs shall be located so as to obstruct the vision of

9. Temporary signs
a. The following signs shall be permitted anywhere within the City and shall not require a permit:
(1) Construction signs which identify the architects, engineers, contractors, and other
individuals or firms involved with the construction. This shall not including any
advertisement of any product, and signs announcing the character of the building
enterprise or the purpose for which the building is intended,during the construction period.
The maximum allowable area will be of thirty-two(32)square feet for each firm.The signs
shall be confined to the site of the construction and shall be removed within fourteen (14)
days of the beginning of the intended use of the project;
(2) On site real estate signs advertising the sales, rental, or lease of the premises. The
maximum size shall be a total area of twelve (12) square feet. Such signs shall be
removed within seven (7)days of the sale, rental, or lease;
(3) political campaign signs announcing the candidates seeking political office and other data
pertinent thereto, up to an area of thirty-two (32)square feet for each premises. These
signs shall be confined within private property and removed within seven (7)days after
the election for which they were made;

Aquaculture:The regulation and cultivation of water plants and animals for human use or consumption.
Aquaculture may include hatcheries,marine crop production and other similar uses that occur in either
fresh or salt water.
Aquifer.A groundwater bearing geologic formation or formations that contains sufficient amounts of

(1) Game/Video.Any establishment,room, place,or business location in which there are available

(2) Structurat A permanently roofed arched covered continuous area or passageway at ground level,
open to a street,plaza,open space,or building,that is accessible and open to the public.
Area of Shallow Flooding:A designated"AO"or"AH"Zone on the City's Flood Insurance Rate Map
(FIRM)with base flood depths from one(1)to three(3)feet,where a clearly defined channel does not
exist,where the path of flooding is unpredictable and indeterminate, and where velocity flow may be
evident.
Area of Special Flood Hazard: The land in the floodplain subject to a one (1) percent or greater
chance of flooding in any given year.
Area or Surface Area of a Sign: That area enclosed by one rectangle, the sides of which make
contact with the extreme points or edges of the sign,excluding the supporting structure which does not
form part of the sign proper or of the display.
The"area of the sign"composed of characters or words attached directly to a large uniform building wall
surface is the smallest rectangle which encloses the whole group.
As-Graded:The extent of surface conditions on completion of grading.
Assessment:An estimation or determination of the significance,importance,or value of land,buildings,
or a proposed development activity.
Attached Wireless Communication Facility: Is a wireless communication facility that is affixed to an
existing structure and is not considered a component of the structure to which it is attached.
Auditor:The Snohomish County Auditor.
Automobile Parking Area, Public:An open area, other than a street or private automobile parking
area,designed to be used for the parking of two(2)or more automobiles.
Automobile Parking Area,Private:An open area,located on the same lot with a dwelling or hotel,for
parking automobiles of the occupants of such buildings.
Automobile Service Station:A building or structure designed or used for the retail sale or supply of
fuels(stored only as prescribed by existing legal regulations),lubricants,air,water,and other operating
