Upon our arrival the contractor had excavated to approximately 4' below existing grades. Current exposed soils were variable with pockets of tan clay, some sand and gravel, and apparent darker fill. While on site GeoTest met with the project owner and contractor. Five test pits were dug to help determine the depth to suitable native soils. See photos on page two of four of the test pits. Based on the test pits and our observations, it's our opinion that depth to suitable native soils for footing support is approximately 1' to 3' below current grades. It's our understanding that the contractor will likely be digging out the apparent fill in the next few days. GeoTest should be present to observe the excavation and verify that suitable subgrade soils have been reached. It's our understanding that once complete the contractor may backfill with import to raise grades back to bottom of footing elevation. If this approach is taken the excavation should extend laterally, beyond the edge of each footing, to an amount equal to the depth of the fill placed. Our observations were discussed with the project owner and contractor. GeoTest will return to the site upon request. Material was in place and had been previously compacted upon our arrival. In general, the building pad appeared well compacted. Some segregation was observed in the recycled concrete. Test above attained 95% or greater compaction. A 4.1% moisture correction was applied to the test above. It should be noted that it will be difficult to test compaction on the recycled concrete due to the amount of oversize (material retained on the 3/4" sieve). Upon our arrival, the contractor was in process of back-filling the excavation with import recycled crushed concrete. The contractor stated that the southern portion of the pad was excavated to apparent native soils. The contractor has excavated most of the darker apparent fill soils on the pads northern portion and is planning to excavate a little more out of the the northwest and northeast corners. Based on our visual observations and testing it appears that the contractor is exposing suitable subgrade soils. It should be noted that GeoTest is not aware of any geotechnical report on the project and at this time - we're observing and documenting conditions and not providing geotechnical recommendations. A large single drum roller was on site and will be used to compact the import recycled concrete later on this date. GeoTest will return to the site upon request. See photos on page 2.
