Deceived JAN 2 2 2019 A I STURDY ENGINEERING C O R P O R A T 1 O N Civil Structural January 20,2019 Evaluation of soils at Western Forest Products Site Truck Bin, Cyclone and Bag House Foundations 19406 68"Dr. N.E.Arlington,WA Excavation for the subject foundations was completed by Taylor Excavators using a track back-hoe. Material was being loaded onto dump trucks and removed from site. Truck Bin Foundation Upon arrival most of the excavation for the truck bin foundation was complete. Depth of excavation was nearing 48-in. At the base the materials were a gravelly coarse sand with a few cobbles and few fines. The material, due to lack of fines was easy to probe to a depth of 6-in to 9-in. The excavated side walls formed well with little sluffing. The side walls of the excavation did sluff slightly during a test run of the large vibratory roller at the bottom of the excavation. The vibratory roller did not appreciably increase the density of the native material. No further rolling is required. Cyclone & Bag Hose Foundations The excavation for the cyclone and bag house foundations were completed to a depth of 18-in below existing asphalt levels. The materials at the excavated depth consisted of gravelly coarse sand and few fines. The material, due to lack of fines was easy to probe to a depth of 6-in to 9-in. A large vibratory roller made 2-passes over the excavated materials as a trial run. Probing yielded less than 6-in depths. The 18-in excavation depth appears to adequate to reach stable native material. I did not observe of the compacting of the subgrade and proof rolling. Instructions to the contractor (Taylor Excavators) and Kenneth Dawson (Abbott Construction)were given prior to departure. Compaction requirements are as follows: Once excavated to depth it was requested that the subgrade be compacted using the onsite vibratory roller. Requirements included three passes over the subgrade at a maximum speed of 2-mph. Upon completion of the compacting proof roll the subgrade with a loaded dump truck. Minor indentations into the subgrade of 2-in is acceptable. Greater rutting is an indication of unsuitable underlying soils. These soils shall be over-excavated. If the excavation is 1-ft depth or less, back-fill with gravel borrow and compacted in 8-in loose lifts. Over-excavations of greater than 1-ft depth shall be backfilled with 2- in x 4-in quarry spalls to a depth 1-ft below subgrade. The-over-excavation requirements are for the foundation area and under any paved areas. Native gravelly coarse sand or gravel borrow can be placed to bring the subgrade to proper.elevations. Imported material shall-compacted in 8-in loose lifts with the vibratory roller following-the requirements listed above. Conclusions: The gravelly coarse.:sand material found at subgrade has.a bearing capacity of-3,000-psf. Project: Arlington Renewal (NAS) Inspector: Niccolo Guiao Project Location: 19406 69'Dr NE Jurisdiction: City of Arlington Krazan PM: JM Weather: Mostly Cloudy Temp: 40's F A Krazan representative visited the project site today for a reinforced concrete inspection. Truck Bin Foundations Upon our arrival today, the concrete subcontractor (Finishing Edge) had completely placed reinforcing steel and embed plated for the planned truck bin foundations. We verified the foundations' reinforcing steel for size, grade, count, spacing, lap and clearances. The foundations' reinforcing steel were adequately secured and supported to prevent significant movement during concrete placement. The embed plates locations in the foundations were verified by the contractor. In our opinion, the truck bin foundations' reinforcing steel conforms to provided plans (sheet S2 of 2) by the contractor titled, "Western Forest Product: Truck Bin Foundation" (by Sturdy Engineering) dated 12/5/18. While at site, we observed the concrete subcontractor place approximately 160 cubic yards of mix no. 0260A6C from Miles (from Everett). The concrete was placed using a pump truck and was mechanically consolidated. We performed temperature and slump tests of the sampled concrete. We cast two (2) sets of 4x8 cylinders with concrete breaks scheduled on 1/28/19 and 2/18/19 with a hold cylinder. Refer to concrete report nos. 18324CRO12119-NG-1 and 2 for concrete details. It should be noted that we were informed by the contractor that the permit number for this area of the project has not been issued. Thus, inspection was performed on the basis of provided plans and e-mail conversation with the engineer. IR Site Pictures This field report is for information purposes only. The excavated side walls formed well with little stuffing. Then filled with gravel borrow and compacted in 7I68 San Juan Hill Lane a Anacortes,Washington 98221 • Phone: (360) 299-251 l • Fax: (360) 299-2698 ' E-maii: sturclyCLsturdyengineei•ing, com Western Forest Products Soils Evaluation 19406 68t'Dr. NE Arlington,.WA Page 2 - 8-in loose lifts. The over-excavation requirements are for the foundation area and under any paved areas. Native gravelly coarse sand or gravel borrow can be placed to bring the subgrade to proper.elevations. Imported material shall-compacted in 8-in loose lifts with the vibratory roller following-the requirements listed above. Conclusions: The gravelly coarse.-sand material found at subgrade has a bearing capacity of 3,000=p8f. Original designs were based on 1,500-psf allowable bearing. Project: Arlington Renewal (NAS) Inspector: Niccolo Guiao Project Location: 19406 68'Dr NE Jurisdiction: City of Arlington Krazan PM: JM Weather: Mostly Cloudy Temp: 40's F A Krazan representative visited the project site today for a reinforced concrete inspection. Thus, inspection was performed on the basis of provided plans and e-mail conversation with the engineer. ., .►. ss 0 Site Pictures This field report is for information purposes only.
