Fluid Motion, Inc. is planning to hang a 30" diameter spiral duct from the roof timber trusses. The objective to evaluate the existing roof trusses and designed hangers for the duct. Since the duct will be inside an enclosed building no wind load will be imposed on the duct or its supports. The existing roof trusses are supporting the existing roof. Roof Dead Load, Live Load and Snow Load will be considered in this evaluation. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The existing roof truss was field measured and analyzed for Dead load, Roof Live Load, Snow load an d incidental forces (MEP), using RISA 3D structural analysis software and evaluated against NDS 2018 (National Design Specification for wood Construction) as adopted by IBC 2021. The analysis indicates that two of existing vertical brace stresses (before addition of the new duct) exceed code allowable by about 18%. The forces due to the new duct (Dead load and Seismic forces) added to the bottom cord of the truss and the truss was reanalyzed. These results were compared against the original analysis results. The maximum stress increase in any member, due to added duct, is about 8%. This increase in the member stress is considered to be acceptable.
