Thus, supply and return ductwork installed in this area is not required to be insulated per Section C403.2.7.2. Only ductwork located in unconditioned spaces or outside the building are required to be insulated. However, per this same section if the supply air being conveyed is less than 55 degrees For greater than 105 degrees F, then this ductwork IS required to be insulated with a minimum of R-3.3 insulation. If ductwork routed above a T-bar ceiling conveys direct outside air (OSA) to a mechanical system, then per Section C403.2.7.1 this ductwork is required to be insulated to the same level as a steel-framed wall including a vapor retarder per the 2012 IBC. The question has come up regarding duct work in unconditioned space requiring insulation. The vaulted ceiling of building envelope is insulated, with suspended ceiling below, duct work in between and diffusers to space below. After reviewing C403.2.7.2 I'm not clear on weather duct insulation is required or not. The contractor on site is stating that it is conditioned space therefore not required to be insulated.
