The Nelson Consulting Engineering PS drawings dated 12/20/2019 shows a one column next to the
East CMU wall. We are requesting to replace the HSS 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 3/16 next to the existing CMU
wall with one (1) HSS 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 3/16 that the wide flange beam will bear on. This column will be
located to the West not more than 5'-0" from the existing CMU wall. See attached detail SD8.0 for
both column type.

RFI Description
Some of the 2x12 blocks are splitting due to the amount of Simpson SDS25300 screws being
installed into them. Where the exisitng 2x12 top and bottom chords butt the SDS25300 screws have
a tendency to split the wood as well. We are gluing the blocks with two 1/4" beads per the drawings
and need your direction on how to keep the blocks and chords from future splitting? My
recommendation would be to use six (6) screws in each block to the chords with four (4) more beads
of glue. I suggest that where the chords butt together we pre-drill the SDS25300 screws at the plates
only. If we note any splitting in other places to pre-drill those as well. We will offset the blocks and
steel plates vertically as well to reduce the screws aligning from one side to the other. Please respond
ASAP.

Issue #1 the first truss West of the East block wall at the south end of the truss at the last diagonal
web member holes were cut long ago to allow piping to pass through. The pipes have all been
removed and we are asking for the repair at this area. See Photo A & B attached. Issue #2 the sixth
truss West from the East wall at close to mid span, the 2x12 top chord has a 3.5 inch diameter hole
drilled through at the middle of the 2x12. See photo C. Please provide us with the repair to this area
as soon as possible.

RFI Description
The south section of truss number four from the exterior east CMU wall has a 2x12 attached
continuously on the bottom chord. There is a gap of 1/2 to 3/4 inch showing at the top. The 2x12
appeared to be installed originally with nails and then 3 inch screws were added at a later date to try
and squeeze the gap together. This gap presents an issue between the new 2x6 webs are being
added. Our solution is where the steel plate legs or strap comes into contact with the newly added
2x6 webs we will add a 5 1/2" wide piece of 1/2 inch plywood shims directly behind the steel plate and
to the new web. The plywood shim will be glued to the new 2x6 web. Will the 3 inch screws we are
currently using be satifactory with the additional 1/2" filler or will we need longer screws? Can we use
this repair where ever this issue exists?

RFI Description
Per your request and direction we have done a random check using a Tavool moisture meter on the
existing roof trusses. My findings are as follows: 1) Between the exterior east CMU wall and the fifth
truss to the west (this truss has a plywood smoke stop added) the top chord, bottom chord and webs
had between 9.4% and 11.2% moisture plus or minus 2%. 2) At truss 6 and 7 which are located on
the west side of the plywood smoke barrier we have under 7.6% moisture at the top chord, bottom
chord and web members. We were told that the bare hot water pipes located in this space are heated
to between 180 and 200 degrees. It appears that this heat especially on the west side of the smoke
stops is causing the moisture to be removed in the trusses.

RFI Description
The Arlington Building Official has required us to confirm the existing concrete slab on grade
thickness where the three HSS columns will be installed directly below the center of the 100 foot span
trusses. The depth of the concrete was checked by roto hammer using at 5/8" drill bit. The concrete
thickness at the east most column has a depth of 11 inches. The concrete at the middle column
located 114 inches to the west of the first column has a depth of 13 inches and the concrete at the
column farthest to the west we could not get to through with a 15 inch long bit. Where we drilled the
first and second holes I used a Geotech probe to gage the soil bearing pressure below. I could only
get the probe an inch into the sub-soils with all my 193 lbs. weight. We did not observe any
reinforcing steel, however National Food Corporation's representative, Sam had installed new drains
in this slab in the vicinity and said that there was only welded wire mesh in the slab. Please let us
know as soon as possible if new footings will need to be installed.

RFI Description
Per our phone conversation this morning regarding the last diagonal web member that does not use a
steel strap but extentends down to the bottom chord of the truss. The sistered 2x6 web on the west
side of truss numer 4 from the east was installed correctly. The sistered 2x6 web on the east side of
truss number 4 could not be installed in one piece. We cut this 2x6 web in half in order to install it
around the existing piping. We then took an existing 1 1/2" x 24" strap that has 12 holes drilled into it
and split this over the cut on the 2x6 web. We screwed six (6) screws you originally specified on
each side of the cut. They are smaller than the SDS25 screws. I have attached some photos so you
can see the repairs. Please let us know if this is adequate.
