The unit shall use wetted heat transfer media to adiabatically cool the air stream entering the dry, finned coil and shall distribute and manage the water flow to keep dry the finned coil to contain the water within the unit. hydroBLUâ„¢ technology shall be employed to determine the precise amount of water feed needed for maintaining performance. 1.2 Quality Quality Assurance: The cooler manufacturer shall have a Management System certified by an accredited registrar as complying with the requirements of ISO 9001:2008 to ensure consistent quality of products and services. Manufacturers that are not ISO 9001:2008 Certified shall not be acceptable. 1.3 Thermal Performance Thermal performance shall be guaranteed by manufacturer. When operating in dry mode equipment shall be certified and meet stringent requirements of Independent Third Party Certification Agencies such as CTI or Eurovent. When operating in adiabatic mode equipment shall have been thoroughly analyzed for proper performance and have had similar units tested in climate controlled laboratory, instrumented according to best practices of CTI and ASHRAE. 2.0 Construction Details 2.1 Product The cooler shall consist of an Adiabatic Cooling System, a heat exchanger, powder coated galvanized steel casing, and one or more low noise axial fans with maintenance-free motors with Güntner Motor Management (GMM) for fan speed control. The Adiabatic Cooling System shall consist of evaporative cooling pads, humidity and ambient temperature sensor, GHM water metering controller, a water distribution and collection system with flow control valve, flow meter, strainer, and solenoid drain valve. The heat exchanger shall consist of coils fitted with fins (copper pipe, aluminum fins), distribution and header pipes (copper) and pipe connections to the pipeline system. 2.2 Coil The dry cooler coil shall have a floating coil design that prevents any contact of the refrigerant/fluid carrying tubes with the supporting frame allowing for thermal expansion and contraction of the tubes without risk of tube damage at the tube sheet. The coil shall use expanded support tubes to minimize flexing during installation. Coil shall be constructed of 0.47 inch diameter copper tubes. Fins shall be constructed of aluminum, full drawn collar with tubes expanded into collar. Coil tubes shall be connected to copper headers. Coils shall be pressure tested to 261 psig (18 bar) with dry air underwater and shipped with a 25 psig (1.7 bar) dry air holding charge. Coil shall be ETL listed. 2.3 Casing The cooler casing shall be robust, self-supporting construction of galvanized steel, powder coated with RAL 7035 (light grey). Within the casing, each fan chamber shall be separated by an internal baffle to prevent windmilling during off-cycle. 2.4 Fans Fan sets shall consist of a system utilizing external rotor motor with die cast aluminum sickle bladed impeller and fan guard. Impeller and rotor shall form one complete unit to ensure proper balancing. Fan sets shall be supplied with full bell mouth fan plate, optimized for highest efficiency. Wire fan guards shall be of welded construction, coated in a weather proof durable synthetic finish for maximum corrosion protection and in compliance with safety standard EN294. Fans shall be subject to balance quality Q6.3 according to VDI 2060. 2.5 Fan Motors Fan motors shall be Electronically Commutated (EC) with inherent ability to control fan speed without auxiliary components. Use of alternating current (AC) motors shall not be acceptable. If AC motors are provided a variable frequency drive (VFD) and sine filter must be provided. Fan motors shall be furnished for operation on a 480 volt, a 3 phase, a 60 hertz power supply. Fan motor shall be maintenance free. Motors requiring periodic lubrication shall not be acceptable. Motors shall be sealed with a labyrinth seal impeding the ingress of splash water and include drain holes for condensation water drainage. Thermal contacts shall be integrated into the motor windings. Motors shall have protection class IP 54 and windings with thermal class F according to DIN EN 60 034-1. 2.6 Adiabatic Cooling System The indirect adiabatic cooling system will pre-cool the entering air stream prior to the finned coil heat transfer surface. 2.6.1 Wetted pads shall be constructed of specially designed cellulose paper that is chemically treated to resist deterioration and bacterial growth. 2.6.2 Güntner Hydro Management (GHM) controller shall be included to regulate water flow rate based on ambient conditions, fan speed and process conditions. Ability to vary water flow rate is crucial to minimize water consumption. Systems that do not modulate water flow shall not be acceptable. 2.6.3 Controls shall determine requirement for water usage. If the external temperature and the fans’ speed are above the set start value for the wetting, the wetting is activated. If the speed or the external temperature fall below the set value, the wetting is deactivated. 2.6.4 The water distribution system shall include flow control valve, high pulse rate flow meter, strainer, piping, and solenoid drain valve. Recirculating systems with pump shall not be acceptable. 2.6.5 The water collection system shall be constructed of welded type 304 stainless steel and allow free drainage of excess water.Water basins or water collection devices that can allow for stagnant water shall not be acceptable. 2.6.6 Humidity and ambient temperature sensor shall be included. 2.7 Controls 2.7.1 Güntner Motor Management Cooler shall be supplied with Güntner Motor Management (GMM) to create an intelligent fan motor system that optimizes operation of the cooler and simplifies maintenance. The controller adjusts fan motor speed based on temperature and regulating processes to provide reliability and information for the system. Systems that only allow steps of motors control or only motor cycling shall not be acceptable. GMM reduces sound emission due to no control-induced noise, especially in part-load operation. GMM has various mode of operation for flexibility to meet demands of the system. Modes of operation include: Auto Internal for automatic control of fan speed based on factory supplied sensor; Auto External Analog for automatic control of fan speed based on externally supplied setpoint provided via analog input; Auto External BUS for automatic control of fan speed based on externally supplied setpoint provided via Modbus RTU communication/Modbus TCP/IP/ BACnet IP / BACnet MTSP; Slave External Analog for external control of fan speed sent via analog input; and Slave External BUS for external control of fan speed sent via Modbus RTU communication/Modbus TCP/IP/ BACnet IP / BACnet MTSP. 2.7.1.1 GMM Controller shall have ability to measure energy. 2.7.1.2 Motors shall include Bypass mode. In the event of sensor fault, or loss of communication with control signal or fault in GMM, fan motors shall initiate emergency mode and run at a configurable fan speed. Factory default bypass mode fan speed shall be 100%. 2.7.1.3 GMM shall include freeze protection mode and will oscillate fans in increasing amounts of torque in the event an obstruction such as snow or ice is detected. GMM shall take fan out of operation and indicate alarm in the event oscillation does not free fan from obstruction. 2.7.1.4 Low Capacity Motor Management (LCMM) shall be available in order to provide more precise control during extreme low ambient or low load conditions. The GMM shall utilize LCMM to cycle fans while maintaining capacity and minimizing fan energy consumption. 2.7.1.5 GMM shall utilize cleaning function to help remove dirt and debris from coil by running the fans in reverse at configurable intervals. 2.7.1.6 Maintenance Run function shall be available to activate fan motors after configurable time of unit non-operation. Occasional use of fan motors is recommended during prolonged periods of non-operation. 2.7.1.7 GMM shall include digital outputs for alarms (Fault/Warning), operational signal and threshold met. The following suggestions are designed to assist you in installing and operating your Aqua- Vent HYDRONIC Pump Station. INSPECTION Inspect the unit as soon as is received from the shipper. Any shipping damage MUST be immediately identified and claimed with the shipper. Also, make sure that the contents of any loose boxes or crates are identified. Missing parts should be identified at the outset thereby preventing installation delays and unnecessary expense. Electrical nameplate characteristics of motors, controls, etc., should be checked promptly to make sure they are consistent with your electrical service. All of the Aqua-Vent HYDRONIC Pump Stations are fully pressure tested, run-tested, and inspected prior to shipment. A small amount of water or propylene glycol may be left in the tank and piping from the run-off. The glycol is used in run-off at the factory so that there is no potential for freeze damage during shipment. APPLICATION Your Aqua-Vent HYDRONIC Pump Station is designed to isolate plant water from your process equipment, preventing scale build up and premature equipment failure. The accompanying process diagram illustrates the cooling system and identifies the components and performance expectations. EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION Following are the basic components typically provided with an Aqua-Vent Hydronic cooling system: RECIRCULATING PUMP – Closed-coupled centrifugal pump typically operating at 3500 RPM and rated for the conditions shown on the process diagram. A pump curve and maintenance manual are provided. BLADDER TANK – The bladder tank is sized to accommodate the thermal expansion in the cooling system. Typically precharged for 12 psi. See the label on the bladder tank. Aqua-Vent Hydronic Cooling System Installation & Instruction Manual Page 1 of 5 Bulletin IOM 656a Hydronic Cooling PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE – Typically set for 30 psi. INDICATORS – pressure gauges and sight flow indicator (optional) for monitoring system performance. CONTROL PANEL – designed so that the pump runs continuously. LOCATION GUIDELINES The Aqua-Vent HYDRONIC Pump Station should be located close to the equipment requiring cooling. The unit should be located so that gauges are clearly visible to operators and maintenance personnel. PIPE SIZING Typically, the piping gong to and from your equipment should be sized large enough to minimize the pressure losses caused by pipe fittings, valves, and pipe friction. Pressure losses in a piping system can be readily determined using the “equivalent length†method that is detailed out in most piping handbooks. Use the following table for systems requiring less than 200’ length of pipe (less than 30’ for gravity drain) and that has a minimum number of valves and bends. Larger and more complex systems may need special consideration. Consult Dry Coolers for recommendations. Pipe Dia Max. A minimum pipe size of 1.5†is recommended for the supply and return piping. PIPE INSTALLATION The following are some general piping guidelines and recommendations that should be considered when installing your equipment: 1) Qualified contractors who are familiar with your local codes should install your piping system. 2) All piping must be supported independently from the HYDRONIC Pump Station. 3) Install control valves upstream of each piece of equipment to be cooled so that the flow can be balanced among them. 4) Install shut-off valves on each piece of equipment so that it can be isolated for maintenance. 5) Install manual vent valves in the high points of all the process piping to assist in removing air during the initial system start up. PIPE LEAK CHECK Aqua-Vent Hydronic Cooling System Installation & Instruction Manual Page 2 of 5 Bulletin IOM 656b Hydronic Cooling 1) WARNING: Isolate the bladder tank before leak checking the pipe. This will protect the bladder from potential damage during pressure test 2) WARNING: Before filling the system with water, make sure your equipment is protected from potential freezing conditions. 3) Fill the pipe via the makeup water supply connection typically located at the pump suction. 4) WARNING: Do not over-pressurize the system. Some equipment is designed to operate at low pressures (i.e. less than 15 psi). 5) Vent the air out of the high points in the pipe. 6) Fix leaks 7) Relieve pressure on the system. SYSTEM STARTUP 1) Make sure that all shutoff valves in the entire cooling system are fully open. 2) Relieve the pressure on the piping from the previous leak check. 3) Open the valve to the bladder tank (this should have been closed during leak check) 4) Fill the system with water again up to a pressure that is about 5 psi higher than the pre-charge pressure on the bladder tank (i.e. for a 12 psi precharge, fill with water to about 17 psi). 5) Check for correct pump rotation. This can be done by quickly jogging the pump motor and checking the rotation as viewed from the fan on the back of the motor. Typically, rotation should be clockwise as viewed from the back of the motor. If the motor is spinning in reverse, the swap two (2) of the lead wires that feed the control cabinet. NOTE: Never run the pump dry! This will damage the mechanical seal. If the motor is spinn 6) Continue to fill the system with water as needed to maintain the desired suction pressure on the bladder tank. Allow the system to slowly fill with water. Most difficulties in starting a pumping system come from air being trapped in the piping. All high points in the piping system must be vented during the filling operation. Once all the air has been removed from the system, the pressure gauge on the discharge of the pump should read much higher than the suction. Example, a pump designed for 40 psi should read about 40 psi higher on the discharge pipe than on the suction pipe 7) Check the piping system for any leaks. 8) Run the pump for about thirty minutes to dislodge any entrained air bubbles in the piping. While the pump is operating, monitor the pump pressure gauge. If the gauge bounces excessively it is an indication that there is still air in the system. Throttle back slightly on the pump discharge and allow more water to be introduced into the system. 9) Start the plant cooling water flowing through the plate and frame heat exchanger. Reminder: Cooling water from an evaporative cooling tower is very susceptible to accumulation of foreign material and must be filtered or strained prior to passing through the plate and frame heat exchanger. WATER TREATMENT Begin a Water Treatment Program Immediately! Raw city water can be extremely corrosive. In some cases, the make-up water will be so high in mineral content that a normal bleed-off program will not prevent scaling in your equipment. Water treatment will be required and a qualified water treatment company familiar with the local water conditions should be consulted. Periodic draining of the system does not provide adequate corrosion protection. In fact, the potential for corrosion increases each time you drain because more oxygen is introduced into the damp pipes in your system. Most closed-loop water systems use a sodium nitrite based inhibitor and a biocide to prevent biological contamination. These inhibitors will protect both the ferrous and non-ferrous materials in your system. Vendors can supply the inhibitor with a colorant, which allows the treatment to be visually monitored. ROUTINE MAINTENANCE DAILY After the system is operating normally, the user should log typical system pressures and temperatures for future reference. These should be checked daily to determine any significant deviation which may indicate malfunction in the pumping system, heat exchanger or heat source. MONTHLY The pump motor should be lubricated with lithium base grease every three months. This will need to be periodically cleaned to insure adequate water flow to the plate & frame heat exchanger. Most cooling problems are associated with fouling in the plant water piping. IMPORTANT REMINDERS Support all piping independently from the HYDRONIC Pump Station. Use a back flow prevention device on any city water connections made to the HYDRONIC Pump Station. Install wiring in accordance with National Electrical Code and local codes. Clean and flush your system with tri-sodium phosphate (TSP). Never run the pump dry. Never subject the HYDRONIC Pump Station to freezing temperatures without adequate protection. Start a water treatment program immediately.
